READING: We began reading about other types of weather…sunny, rainy, cloudy, and windy. We did a fantastic job of brainstorming what we like to do for each kind of weather. The beach and swimming came up often. I think some of us are missing the warm weather. J We made a list of rhyming words that rhyme with the word “sun.” We also reviewed “at” word family words. We made a list of “an” word family words. By segmenting and sweeping words together, we are becoming better readers. Continue working on these kindergarten words at home: and, big, down, for, jump, little, look, not, run, up, and you. Remember you can go to the Spelling City website to practice, learn, and play games with these words. See if your child can write “at” and “an” word family words such as bat, cat, fat, hat, mat, pat, rat, sat, that, vat, ban, can, Dan, fan, Jan, man, pan, ran, tan, van, and than.

HOMEWORK: LETTER OF THE WEEK: “Rr” will be the letter of the week starting on Monday, January 24. Please sit down with your child and discuss what sound this letter makes. Have your child cut out one small picture from a magazine or newspaper that begins with the letter “R” and bring it to school.

MATH: Everyone took the cumulative test over topics 1-8 this week. We began Topic 9 which is over measurement. We measured with cubes and estimated how long different objects can be. Some new vocabulary words are: long, short, tall, large, medium, small, size, and as long as. Please take the time to talk with your child and use these vocab words at home.

HANDWRITING: We continue to learn how to make lowercase letters. We are really stressing that when we write, we need to take our time. We need to make the letters nicely so everyone can read what is written. We always need QUALITY WORK! J

SCIENCE: We have been writing in our science journal about what we have learned about fabric. Our weaving project was a success, too. We have been exploring different ways to get fabric dirty. Getting fabric dirty is really fun!
