Fisher Punch Cards are Back!

Each student has received a "Pawsitive Punch Card." During the month of February, every time students get "caught" doing something positive, they will receive a punch. Filled cards will also be displayed in our hallway. At Fisher, we want to focus on the positive things kids are doing to encourage them to continue on with positive behavior! You can talk to your child about how receiving a punch makes them feel and what their plan is to keep doing positive things! :)

READING: Staying Healthy is our new reading theme. We talked about germs and how we can’t see them. We learned that germs can travel as far as 3 elephants if we don’t catch them inside our elbow or in a kleenex! We measured how long that would actually be. We read many healthy stories, made Achoo Art, and made a hungry caterpillar headband to remind us to eat healthy fruit!

HOMEWORK: LETTER OF THE WEEK: “Ss” will be the letter of the week starting on Monday, January 31. Please sit down with your child and discuss what sound this letter makes. Have your child cut out one small picture from a magazine or newspaper that begins with the letter “S” and bring it to school.

MATH: We continue our work in Topic 9 which is over measurement. We measured with cubes and estimated how long different objects can be. We made an inch worm ruler to help us measure with inches. We sure do love to measure different things in the room!

HANDWRITING: We need to keep practicing the lower case letters. We know how to make the letters: c, o, a, s, d, g, v, w, u, t. All of these letters start on the top line. The letter t is the only letter so far that starts above the top. It is made with a big line going down.

SCIENCE: We did a great job of getting the fabric clean that we made really dirty last week. We learned that sometimes you have to use soap and a scrub brush to help get stains out of fabric. We have a better understanding about our clothes and why the sometimes don’t always come clean. J We also made something from fabric. Be sure to ask your child about it!

100th Day is tomorrow, Friday, January 28. Be sure to count out 100 snack items and bring them to school! J

Valentine Boxes: February is right around the corner! Everyone should be making their Valentine box at home. We can’t wait to see what everyone creates! The valentine boxes can start coming to school on Thursday, February 10th.

Valentines: When your child sends Valentines to school; please have the student sign their own name on the Valentine. Do not put whom the Valentines are for. We only have a short time to pass them out. Thanks for your help.

READING: We began reading about other types of weather…sunny, rainy, cloudy, and windy. We did a fantastic job of brainstorming what we like to do for each kind of weather. The beach and swimming came up often. I think some of us are missing the warm weather. J We made a list of rhyming words that rhyme with the word “sun.” We also reviewed “at” word family words. We made a list of “an” word family words. By segmenting and sweeping words together, we are becoming better readers. Continue working on these kindergarten words at home: and, big, down, for, jump, little, look, not, run, up, and you. Remember you can go to the Spelling City website to practice, learn, and play games with these words. See if your child can write “at” and “an” word family words such as bat, cat, fat, hat, mat, pat, rat, sat, that, vat, ban, can, Dan, fan, Jan, man, pan, ran, tan, van, and than.

HOMEWORK: LETTER OF THE WEEK: “Rr” will be the letter of the week starting on Monday, January 24. Please sit down with your child and discuss what sound this letter makes. Have your child cut out one small picture from a magazine or newspaper that begins with the letter “R” and bring it to school.

MATH: Everyone took the cumulative test over topics 1-8 this week. We began Topic 9 which is over measurement. We measured with cubes and estimated how long different objects can be. Some new vocabulary words are: long, short, tall, large, medium, small, size, and as long as. Please take the time to talk with your child and use these vocab words at home.

HANDWRITING: We continue to learn how to make lowercase letters. We are really stressing that when we write, we need to take our time. We need to make the letters nicely so everyone can read what is written. We always need QUALITY WORK! J

SCIENCE: We have been writing in our science journal about what we have learned about fabric. Our weaving project was a success, too. We have been exploring different ways to get fabric dirty. Getting fabric dirty is really fun!

READING: We continued discussing snowy weather by reading lots of snowmen stories. We were so happy to get more snow this week! Now we can actually go outside and try to make snowmen. We had a great time playing “Snowman.” It is just like hang man. We realized that we better start working on our kindergarten words, so we could play the game better. Some other snowman activities this week were making edible snowmen, making a snowman craft, singing snowmen songs, making snow globes, putting snowmen in order by 5’s and 10’s, and painting a snow picture using marshmallows.

HOMEWORK: LETTER OF THE WEEK: “Qq” will be the letter of the week starting on Tuesday, January 18. Please sit down with your child and discuss what sound this letter makes. Have your child cut out one small picture from a magazine or newspaper that begins with the letter “Q” and bring it to school.

MATH: We continue working in topic 8. We found bugs and cars in a line where we had to count them using ordinal numbers: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th. We will take the topic test at the end of this week We will then begin preparing for a cumulative test which covers topics 1-8. We will review all topics we have learned before taking the cum. test next week.

HANDWRITING: We started learning how to make lowercase letters. We are learning how to make lowercase letters between two lines. We know that all letters begin at the top. When we begin writing the magic c letters, we will begin writing them from the top line. We have been practicing writing c, o, and s.

SCIENCE: We are continuing to explore different kinds of fabric. We learned that fabric is made of threads. We had a chance to pull fabric apart by the threads. Fabric is put together by weaving the threads by woof and warp. We started weaving paper threads together to make a placemat for home. The weaving process is taking some time for us to master. J It can be hard to pull the paper thread through going over and under to make our pattern right.

Winter Expectations: (please review at home with your child)

1. All students must have snow boots, snow pants, hat, mittens, and coat for play time at recess.

2. All students can play with the snow by building forts and snowmen. We ask that the snow is not to be thrown. J

READING: We began the new year by ringing in a new reading theme of “Sunshine and Raindrops.” We have been exploring snowy weather this week and hoping we get more snow! We read different versions of the story called The Mitten. After reading the story, we had a chance to become an animal from the story and jump inside a mitten. What fun! We also read The Jacket I Wear in the Snow. This helped remind us what order we should put on our winter gear. Our goal is to get dressed for outside in 5 minutes or less! J

The kindergarten words we should know how to read are: I, go, a, me, to, in, we, see, my, can, it, red, up, the, you, said, for, not, and big. To have more practice at home, have your child use these words when they write.

HOMEWORK: LETTER OF THE WEEK: “Pp” will be the letter of the week starting on Monday, January 10th. Please sit down with your child and discuss what sound this letter makes. Have your child cut out one small picture from a magazine or newspaper that begins with the letter “P” and bring it to school.

MATH: We started topic 8 where we will learn how to count by ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th). We also reviewed the line of symmetry and learned about parts (fractions). We discussed equal and not equal parts. We know that equal parts have to be the same size and the same shape. We found different foods that show halves, too.

HANDWRITING: We are reviewing how to write capital letters and numbers 0-9.

SCIENCE: We are learning about different kinds of fabric. We have had a chance to explore fabric with our senses. We love to feel fleece and we think burlap is very scratchy! Be sure to check out our fabric collages at school.

Dear Parents,

The 100th day of school is coming up at the end of January.  We have many exciting plans happening on this day!  We are all looking forward to it!
Please have your child bring 100 small snack pieces to school by Tuesday, January 18!  We will be counting by ones, fives, and tens all the way up to 100.  The fun part will be eating them when we are all done.
Some snack ideas might include 100 mini marshmallows, 100 chocolate chips, 100 cherrios or other cereal,  100 pretzels, 100 raisins, or 100 M&M’s (anything that is small to make a fun mix). Use your imagination!

Thank you,
Mrs. Eggers, Mr. Daugherty, and Mrs. Oetker
