READING: We began the new year by ringing in a new reading theme of “Sunshine and Raindrops.” We have been exploring snowy weather this week and hoping we get more snow! We read different versions of the story called The Mitten. After reading the story, we had a chance to become an animal from the story and jump inside a mitten. What fun! We also read The Jacket I Wear in the Snow. This helped remind us what order we should put on our winter gear. Our goal is to get dressed for outside in 5 minutes or less! J
The kindergarten words we should know how to read are: I, go, a, me, to, in, we, see, my, can, it, red, up, the, you, said, for, not, and big. To have more practice at home, have your child use these words when they write.
HOMEWORK: LETTER OF THE WEEK: “Pp” will be the letter of the week starting on Monday, January 10th. Please sit down with your child and discuss what sound this letter makes. Have your child cut out one small picture from a magazine or newspaper that begins with the letter “P” and bring it to school.
MATH: We started topic 8 where we will learn how to count by ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th). We also reviewed the line of symmetry and learned about parts (fractions). We discussed equal and not equal parts. We know that equal parts have to be the same size and the same shape. We found different foods that show halves, too.
HANDWRITING: We are reviewing how to write capital letters and numbers 0-9.
SCIENCE: We are learning about different kinds of fabric. We have had a chance to explore fabric with our senses. We love to feel fleece and we think burlap is very scratchy! Be sure to check out our fabric collages at school.
