READING: We have started our phonics program where the children are exploring their language. We learned our first language was the word “Waa!” when we were a baby. Our language grew to babbling and now our language is our words we speak! We can use our language and write it down using the alphabet. We know the letters of the alphabet capture a sound! We had a great time learning about vowels this week. We learned EVERY WORD HAS A VOWEL! These vowels are hard workers! Since they are hard workers they have earned a golden star. We hope your child brought home their alphabet and shared the vowel song with you!
Vowel Song (sung to the tune of Mary Had a Little Lamb)
There is an alphabet that has 5 letters,
And these are the vowels.
A-E-I-O-U, A-E-I-O-U, A-E-I-O-U
And these are the vowels!
LETTER OF THE WEEK: “Ii” will be the letter of the week starting on Monday, October 31. Please sit down with your child and discuss what sound this letter makes. Have your child cut out one small picture from a magazine or newspaper that begins with the letter “I.”
MATH: We have finished exploring the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. We learned more about numbers that are more, fewer, or the same. We completed our topic test or will very soon. We have been practicing sorting, making patterns, and reviewing positional words (inside, outside, over, under, on, left, right, top, middle, bottom) to help prepare us for an assessment which reviews topics 1-4.
HANDWRITING: Remember: all letters start at the top! Keep working on F, E, D, P, B, R, N, and M. We are getting better at making L, K, H, U, V, W, X, Y, and Z which are corner starting letters. We are ready to begin the center starting letters next!
SCIENCE: We are continuing to look at the four seasons of the year! The colors of the leaves are beautiful!
SOCIAL STUDIES: Our citizenship unit has gone public! We are looking into manners we use outside of school and our house! It has been fun role-playing what good manners look like at Wal-mart, McDonalds, the movie theater, the bank, and many others places in Marshalltown! We will be sorting good and bad manners we see in public together very soon.
