READING:  We have been talking about our family and what makes up a family.  We are all learning that every family is different. Ask your child what they have learned each day.   We have also been working on reading the kindergarten words.  We should know:  I, a, go, to, me, in, red, see, we, my.

LETTER OF THE WEEK: “K” will be the letter of the week starting on Monday, November 14.  Please sit down with your child and discuss what sound this letter makes.  Have your child cut out one small picture from a magazine or newspaper that begins with the letter “L.”

MATH:  We are learning the numbers 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10.  We will practice writing our numbers, breaking the numbers up into parts like 2 and 4 make 6 and counting out counters to make our number of the day. We will be taking our test over numbers 5-10 and starting to compare which numbers are larger or smaller.

HANDWRITING:  We are still practicing making frog jump letters and corner starting letters using chalkboards, magna doodles, and mats.  Remember:  all letters start at the top!  Keep working on F, E, D, P, B, R, N, and M.  We are getting better at making L, K, H, U, V, W, X, Y, and Z which are corner starting letters.

SCIENCE:  We are continuing to look at the four seasons of the year!  The colors of the leaves are beautiful!  We have been graphing the crazy weather this week, too.

Help Student Success: We use the word Quality Work at school.  When your child brings home a project question them on their work.  Ask them if they did quality work and have them explain why it is or is not quality work.

Please make sure your child has gym shoes with them each gym day!  Gym class has lots of running and sharp movement type activities.  If the children are not wearing tennis shoes they run the risk of getting injured or falling and injuring another student.

Dates to Remember:

·        November 14 PTO Meeting at 6:30
·         November 23, 24, 25 - No School

Cold Weather- With cold weather and snow soon on its way please remember to mark all snow pants and coats.  It is amazing how many black size 6 snow pants show up during the winter. Keep practicing buttoning and zipping with your child.  We believe that it is important for children to dress themselves. Our recess time is limited to about 15 minutes, so practicing at home will help the children get outside in time for recess.

Please make sure that your child is not as school any sooner that 8:20 a.m.  There isn't a teacher on duty until then!  If the weather is too cold for the students to be outside or it is raining, a GREEN flag will be posted by the kindergarten door.  This green flag lets the children know it is all right for them to come into the building at the First grade double doors. Thank you!

Pickup and Drop Off Procedures
Goal: The safety of all students is a concern that we share. Our goal is to create a safe pick up and drop off spot for all students and their families. By being patient and following a few simple rules, we can accomplish that goal.

  • All drop off and pick up by car will occur on Pleasantview Road in the cutout area.
  •  After dropping off/picking up their child, parents are to immediately move into traffic allowing other parents to drop off their child. This is NOT a parking spot. Drivers must remain in the car.

  • Cars MUST be in the cutout area for students to get into their car. Students will not be allowed to enter the street to get into their parent’s car.
  • Do NOT double park on Pleasantview.
  • Above All: Be Patient, Be Patient, Be Patient!

Thank you for all that you do to make your child’s kindergarten year a successful one.  Have a great weekend!

READING: We have started our phonics program where the children are exploring their language. We learned our first language was the word “Waa!” when we were a baby. Our language grew to babbling and now our language is our words we speak! We can use our language and write it down using the alphabet. We know the letters of the alphabet capture a sound! We had a great time learning about vowels this week. We learned EVERY WORD HAS A VOWEL! These vowels are hard workers! Since they are hard workers they have earned a golden star. We hope your child brought home their alphabet and shared the vowel song with you!

Vowel Song (sung to the tune of Mary Had a Little Lamb)

There is an alphabet that has 5 letters,

And these are the vowels.

A-E-I-O-U, A-E-I-O-U, A-E-I-O-U

And these are the vowels!

LETTER OF THE WEEK: “Ii” will be the letter of the week starting on Monday, October 31. Please sit down with your child and discuss what sound this letter makes. Have your child cut out one small picture from a magazine or newspaper that begins with the letter “I.”

MATH: We have finished exploring the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. We learned more about numbers that are more, fewer, or the same. We completed our topic test or will very soon. We have been practicing sorting, making patterns, and reviewing positional words (inside, outside, over, under, on, left, right, top, middle, bottom) to help prepare us for an assessment which reviews topics 1-4.

HANDWRITING: Remember: all letters start at the top! Keep working on F, E, D, P, B, R, N, and M. We are getting better at making L, K, H, U, V, W, X, Y, and Z which are corner starting letters. We are ready to begin the center starting letters next!

SCIENCE: We are continuing to look at the four seasons of the year! The colors of the leaves are beautiful!

SOCIAL STUDIES: Our citizenship unit has gone public! We are looking into manners we use outside of school and our house! It has been fun role-playing what good manners look like at Wal-mart, McDonalds, the movie theater, the bank, and many others places in Marshalltown! We will be sorting good and bad manners we see in public together very soon.

Turkey Dressing

Dear families,
We would like you to do the following fun activity with your child. Please return your creative turkey back to school as soon as you can.

Some examples might be:  Hawaiian Clothes, A lamb using cotton balls, Draw/paint clothes on the turkey, etc.  Some examples from last year are below.
We hope this will be a fun activity for both of you to expand your creativity!  Have Fun!

READING: Our color unit has been so much fun! It has been exciting watching everyone dress up in the color of the day! We made rainbows and made a book about our favorite color. We have also been working on reading the kindergarten words. We should know: I, a, go, to, me, in, red, see, we, my. For fun at home, go to www.spellingcity.com . Click on the button that says “Find A List.” In the middle of the computer screen, type in the name Cynthia Eggers to search for a list by a teacher’s name. Have fun playing the games! LETTER OF THE WEEK: “Hh” will be the letter of the week starting on Monday, October 24. Please sit down with your child and discuss what sound this letter makes. Have your child cut out one small picture from a magazine or newspaper that begins with the letter “H.”

MATH: We are exploring the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. We learned that we need to start at the top to make these numbers, just like letters! These numbers are corner starting letters.J We are also preparing to take an assessment which reviews topics 1-4. We will practice sorting, making patterns, and reviewing positional words (inside, outside, over, under, on, left, right, top, middle, bottom).

HANDWRITING: We are still practicing making frog jump letters and corner starting letters using chalkboards, magna doodles, and mats. Remember: all letters start at the top! SCIENCE: We are continuing to look at the four seasons of the year! The colors of the leaves are beautiful!

SOCIAL STUDIES: Our citizenship unit has been a great review over manners. We have been comparing good manners and bad manners at school and at home. We love role playing good manners! It was fun acting out being a mom or a dad. We know that when mom or dad tell us to do something, we should look at them and say “OK!” We hope that all kindergarteners are using their good manners at home like we are trying to do at school, too!

2.Visit the Marshalltown Public Library
3.Practice Fisher Cat expectations
4.Stay cool & be safe

See you in the fall as First graders!
